RAREFACTIONS

Rarefaction Paintings are an emerging series of paintings and sculptural works, building upon previous metal paintings through increased energy application.

In these rarefaction paintings, special apparatus is employed to take molten Brass media to over 1000 °C before pouring commences.

As the bulk of the material sluices away, and is lost, a gossamer thin veil of molten residue remains. The intense superheating of the substrate causes a distinctive rarefaction to occur.

While the works are ostensibly monochromatic, hidden within this gossamer is an iridescence of elusive colour.

As with much of the work from the ZERO movement, the onus lies on the viewer to move themselves through the intervening space to discover these moments of emergent chromatic light.
